The 1877 Colt Thunderer was the first double action revolver made in the United States. Repair was difficult because of the intricate design. Changes came soon as black powder gave way to smokeless propellant. At the back of the ranch is a remote timbered area where, with the use of a metal detector, I discovered this shell casing that is now lodged into the woodburning.

The casing was two feet down in the ground. It has laid undisturbed for many years.
